What makes a quote higher?

  • More than one part. A snapped spring often jolts the cables, and a quote that adds them can be fair. Ask to see each part.
  • Spring type and rating. Torsion springs cost more per spring than extension springs, and springs rated for more cycles cost more again.
  • A door that isn’t a standard size. Golf cart doors and doors added when a carport was enclosed may not be a standard size, so the company may need to see them before quoting.
  • After-hours calls. Expect an extra fee for a night or holiday visit, HomeAdvisor notes.
  • The visit itself. Many companies charge to come out. Ask what it is and whether it goes toward the repair.

How do you tell if a quote is too high?

Compare it with the table, and ask questions when it is several times higher. In April 2025, Phoenix TV station azfamily reported that a 79-year-old Fountain Hills woman was billed $4,911.88 to replace two springs and two drums (the spools the cables wind on). Other garage door companies told the station that job, springs and drums together, should cost about $300 to $700.

The Better Business Bureau’s warning signs: a generic business name with no address, no ID or marked vehicle, a low service-call price that grows once the door is open, and pressure to decide or pay before the work is done. If a price surprises you, you can stop, pay for the visit, and get a second quote. The spring repair page covers spring quotes in more detail.

What should a written quote include?

  • Each part by name and size, for example both springs with their size and cycle rating, not just “repair”.
  • Labor, the service-call or trip fee, and any after-hours fee.
  • The warranty on parts and on labor.
  • The company’s Arizona contractor license number, which you can look up at roc.az.gov.
  • The total, before work starts.

See what to ask a company before you hire for the questions to ask on the phone.

When does a new door make more sense than a repair?

A new installed garage door costs about $742 to $1,416, according to HomeAdvisor, several times the cost of most single repairs in the table. A door with several damaged panels, or one where the panel quotes approach the price of a new door, is worth a replacement quote too.
